Midsomer Barrow landowner Gareth Heldman is murdered with an Iron Age spear, on the same spot where his father was killed many years before during an archaeologists' dig at the village's prehistoric earthworks. Meanwhile, troupes of new age travellers (whom Heldman strongly disapproved of) are arriving to celebrate the summer solstice on June 21st. Barnaby finds Heldman was a womaniser, with a tangled web of offspring. He also has to reopen the file on the thirty-year-old murder of Roger Heldman and investigate a tale of lost treasure.

When it is determined that the amount of blood would have been more than enough blood loss to kill a person, Bosco suspects that the man murdered someone and was bleeding because the victim tried to fight back.

Rather than clean out the existing boat ramp, Red creates a way to fling a boat over the scrap and land it in the lake. The men have an adventure saving a Lodge rowboat in a flood. Red uses streetcar technology to devise a safe way to cut the grass with an electric lawnmower. Red also demonstrates a way to prevent your wife from stealing the remote and makes an outdoor bathroom out of empty beer cases.
